Getting the Most of your Underwater Camera

Taking pictures underwater is a fantastic way to record your dives and all the fabulous marine life you will experience. Not only will you be able to have fun but you can show your photographs to all your friends and remind yourself of all the great dives you made.

The key to underwater photography starts with a good camera. You must have good quality housing with an excellent seal and well prepared O-ring (use silicone grease) and remember to be prepared by bringing whatever lights, strobes and white balance slates are necessary for your dive. Make sure you understand how your camera works, control the exposure limits, shutter speeds and colour balance.

As any good photographer will tell you, it´s all about preparation, technique and timing. Go slowly and gently so as not to frighten your subject, frame your picture and set the focus, keep the camera steady, don´t forget to breathe and gently press the button.

Good pictures come with practice and great pictures come with even more practice! We have an expert photographer and videographer with us (Ben) who can help you learn more about your camera and different underwater photography techniques with the PADI Underwater Photography Speciality course so that you really know how to take great underwater photographs!
